The Brook

Beds: 1
28 m²

The Brook features a full kitchen, bathroom, living area, and study nook/office. It’s also a thoroughly beautiful home, featuring recycled materials and a feeling reflective of a New York loft.

This is the Small prototype; an opportunity to showcase exemplary attention to detail and the incorporation of unexpected materials, spaces and surfaces. Our exploration of maximum volume with a minimum footprint – beautifully engineered and just a little bit cheeky.

The Brook was designed and built by Nick Lane and Aaron Shields in collaboration under Small and Small Projects. It had to have the capacity to be off-grid. It required similar dimensions to a truck trailer, be transportable and suitable for a regional setting. If there was a second story or mezzanine it needed to be liveable – room to stand and move around. The height of the design wouldn’t sail underneath power lines once secured on a truck trailer, so they approached an engineer friend to mastermind a telescopic frame that would contract, allowing the house to fold into itself.

Small Not Tiny

Small began in 2019, seeking to address the jump from expansive builds to tiny homes by pairing design and construction. They now provide plan packages and custom models, with all our designs allowing for homes to be built by your own contractor or delivered to you through our preferred building team Small Projects.
